For several weeks every July and August, jute plants are cut down and immersed in ponds, covered in mud and leaves, for up to two weeks to soften and then rot. Gradually, Slat seemed to be absorbing such concerns, and, at the assembly yard, was more cautious in his promises than he had been earlier. “It still is very much an experimental system,” he said. Research equipment and tools would be sent out to the gyre with the device, and these would, in any case, benefit the scientific community, he stressed: “Always good to better understand the problem.”

And for those jobs using continuously reinforced concrete with steel, Zeller recommends that roadway owners have contractors “put fabric on there as kind of a belt and suspenders to make sure we do separate the two layers – and the concrete gets to work as an independent layer.” 

The core team comprises of Manvitha, who looks into the overall operations of the enterprise. Ajay Beerla, who looks into sales and marketing, Sharmila Reddy, who looks into day-to-day operations, supply chain and execution of the orders. Krishna and Sai Krishna look into research for the plant food, pest management, and the different varieties of plants that can be grown.

Ayers: What’s the experience like being able to say that your product is on the shelf at Harborside [said to be the largest medical marijuana dispensary in the world], and the experience of doing business with Harborside?

The fourth phase is divided into two parts. The first part of phase 4 consisted of reclaiming the temporary two lanes and some of the parking area, moving water mains and CATV, constructing retaining walls and installing drainage in the parking area. The second part of phase 4 consisted of constructing all drainage in the northbound lane, retaining walls with granite cap, precast/granite curb, chain link fences and constructing the landscaping area between the new causeway and reservation area in the temporary lanes.

Their self-funded venture, HomeCrop, is an urban farming enterprise that was incubated at a-IDEA (Association for Innovation Development of Entrepreneurship in Agriculture), the technology business incubator hosted by ICAR-NAARM (Indian Council of Agricultural Research; National Academy of Agricultural Research Management) in Hyderabad. Manvitha and Sharmila are the co-founders, Krishna is the strategist and planner, Sai Krishna is the director and the brain behind HomeCrop’s soil-less grow mix. The group then hired Ajay Beerla as manager, sales and business development.

Forty such compactors, each with 40 tonnes of storage, are deployed in the mela. As soon as they are filled, the waste will be transported to a plant outside of the city. “Arrangement is such for waste disposal that once the trash is lifted from dustbins, it will touch the ground again only at its disposal site,” Prayagraj Commissioner Dr Ashish Kumar Goel assures.

Agencies are still working on a final plan that will be shared at a public meeting in late January or February.
